Wonderful World of Words
The German on-line magazine "KulturAustausch" ('culture exchange') organized a competition for the most beautiful words in the world. KulturAustausch is a German-language special-interest journal dealing with international cultural exchange.
The most beautiful word in the world: "Yakamoz"
"Yakamoz", Turkish for "the reflection of the moon in the water", was elected the most beautiful word in the world. Second came the chinese word "hu lu" (to snore) and third place was for "volongoto" (luganda for unorganized, chaotic). Almost 2.500 people from 58 nations submitted their favorite word with a brief motivation. A jury selected the best word for each letter of the alphabet, judging the entries on originality of the word, its cultural characteristics and the quality of the motivation.
You can find the 26 winning words (one for each letter in the alphabet) in a pdf file at www.tinyurl.com/3855os, including a translation and a brief motivation (in German). The resulting ABC demonstrates a very interesting diversity of languages and cultures.

I love the fact that there is one word that means 'the refection of the moon in the water'. Very poetic (although finding a word that rhymes with 'Yakamoz' might be difficult...)
Diane, this is exactly what I was thinking. And the very reason why I did a post about it...
Isn't language great?
