Following the changes in the Blogger/Blogspot Commenting Section (see my earlier posts Unfair Changes to Blogger Commenter Options and Changes to Blogger Commenting - continued), please note the upcoming possibility to leave comments on Blogger/Blogspots blogs using your OpenID. [UPDATE: this feature has now been launched officially and is available to all Blogger/Blogspot blogs, see "Blogger launches OpenID commenting" - the text below has been modified to reflect that this is no longer only available in draft.blogger]
This option on Blogger/Blogspot blogs is now available through draft.blogger. If you are a Blogger/Blogspot blog owner, see the instructions in my post "Blogger launches OpenID commenting".
One of the benefits of using your OpenID as a commentor identification is that your commentor name will always contain a direct link to your own blog- or site-URL. That is, if you have 'delegated' that URL to your OpenID before.
After delegating your blog- or site-URL to your OpenID, you will be able to place comments simply by entering that URL as your 'OpenID-name' to identify yourself in the Blogger/Blogspot commenting section, using the "Any OpenID" option in the scroll down menu. This will result in a 'commentor name' with a direct link to your blog or site attached to it, which will enable anyone to simply click on your commentor name and be switched through to your blog.
So this is not only important for building valuable dofollow links on blogs that allow you to do so, it is also important to get people to your blog/site. Simply by clicking on your name. (If, for example, you would use one of the other options to leave comments, e.g. by using your Google/Blogger account, clicking on your name will only swith people to your profile page, not to your site!)

to your 'abc' OpenID, the result will be a commentor name 'xyz',
hyper linked to your 'xyz.blogspot.com' url)
This will work absolutely fine when commenting on Blogger/Blogspot blogs, provided this OpenID support option has been switched on by the blog owner (see the instructions in my post "Blogger launches OpenID commenting").
It will even work nicely if your own 'delegated' URL is not hosted by one of the OpenID supporting blogging platforms (AOL/AIM, LiveJournal, WordPress, TypeKey and now Blogger/Blogspot already support OpenID).
And again, it is surely a whole lot more beneficial than signing in with your Google/Blogger account, or with your 'plain' OpenID, as that would only result in a commentor name with a link to your Google/Blogger Profile or OpenID page.
Thanks to a/o Sam Ruby of Intertwingly/blog here are the basic instructions on how to claim your blog using your OpenID identity. In OpenID terms, this claiming is called 'delegation', which sounds scary, but in reality it is just a form of autodiscovery, just like you do for your RSS-feed.
If you have an OpenID identity and a blog, then follow these instructions. If you don’t have an OpenID yet, you can get one for free at e.g. ClaimID. (Here’s mine).
Please note that you may already have an OpenID without realizing it, see Sueblimely's post: What is an OpenID? and Orient Lodge's post: OpenID and other stuff.Given such an OpenID identity, copy the following into the <head> section of your weblog, adjusting the two URLs as appropriate:
<link rel="openid.server" href="http://openid.claimid.com/server"/>That’s pretty much it. What this says is that the web page in question is owned by the owner of http://openid.claimid.com/josvanliempd/ and furthermore that http://openid.claimid.com/server may be used to verify the ownership of http://openid.claimid.com/josvanliempd/.
<link rel="openid.delegate" href="http://openid.claimid.com/josvanliempd"/>
By claiming your blog or homepage in this fashion, you can then use your URL (i.e., the URL of your blog or homepage) as your identity.
When done, feel free to check your setup here.
See OpenID explained: Convenience+Security for a brief animated explanation of the benefits of using OpenID.
UPDATE: PLEASE NOTE: Blogger are announcing to re-introduce the option for unregistered commenters to provide an auto-linked URL with their comment. See my post "Blogger to re-introduce auto-linked URL in commenter identification".

As an example, this comment was entered by simply entering one of my blogs urls (that I have connected and registered to my OpenID), in the pull down for "Any OpenID" in this comments section. This should give the name of that blog with a direct link to it, as my commentors name.
As another example, this comment was entered by using my Blogger/Google account, in the pull down for "Sign-in using:" in this comments section. This should give my name and a link to my Google/Blogger profile page, as my commentors name.
As yet another example, this comment was entered by simply entering one of my blogs urls (that I have connected and registered to my OpenID, IN THIS CASE: not a blogger blog, but my "MarketingReview.web-log.nl" blog) in the pull down for "Any OpenID" in this comments section. This should give the name of that blog with a direct link to it, as my commentors name.
This is great! Hope people start adoring openID and create an account in openID :)
If this is a success, other blogging platform giants(wordpress, typepad) might shift to openID commenting and hence make it universal!
Thanks Joel! btw: Wordpress already supports OpenID, I don't know about TypePad.
But this option I found to create an openID and register your blog to it, resulting in a direct comment name link, is great, isn't it?
It is great to see Blogger/Google supporting OpenID. I run a drupal based site and I added OpenID for comments a while ago.
It would be great if we could use OpenID with Google authentication. I'm using Yahoo! for my OpenID authentication.
Many thanks for the great info, I have made an openId now and I want to try here.
Goonie
I guess you'll have to verify the blog url; it is my openID URL which is displayed, not the blog URL..
Any suggestions?
Hi Goonie, it seems to work fine!
-Jos
Joel, did you manage to get it working? If not, let me know if I can help. Did you put those to lines of html in your template, right in the beginning of the 'head' section?
-Jos:)
a@Joel: and did you activate 'safe sign in' at the myopenid account page under 'security settings' and enable authentication with an ssl certificate under 'authentication settings' ?
-Jos
I'm not sure I understand all this at the moment, but let me chew on it some more. You know how slow I can be. Have a great day Jos. Hugs. :)
Hi Sandee! I'm sure you'll figure this out :) -- It is simply to good for you not to star using this ;)
(Really!) But if you need any help, just let me know, ok? Hugs back :)
Hi Jos and thanks for mentioning my post.
I see you are using ClaimID too - now I know where else to find you - it creates a much better profile than myOpenID doesn't it.
Hi Sue. Yes, your post convinced me to move from MyOpenID to ClaimID :)
This seems to work much better, and I found the profile and link/verify options very useful.
btw: why did you leave your comment without a link?
-Jos:)
Apparently there seems to be a bug in this thing, hope it gets sorted out soon!
Ps: Try commenting with your URL to feel the bug :)
Hi Joel, I AM actually commenting with my URL, and it works fine. And now hat I have move to ClaimID, it works even smoother.. Have you any idea as to what the nature of the problem you are experiencing is? Let me know if I can help, ok?
-Jos
I've inserted the openID code(and did the settings too)
claimID sounds a lot more smoother, I'll have to think about it!
And I understand correctly that it doesn't work? Did you get the delegation of your url right?
Check out the ClaimID link in my post, this is very easy! and you can build a whole profile in it, inclusing links to your urls, have the ownership verified, etc.
-Jos
sounds like claim id is directing me back to my blogger profile :o
Joel, I can no exactly see what you are doing, but you should:
- select the "Any OpenID" option
- enter the FULL url of the blog you delegated (I am assuming jout Journal) in this format: http://joel-robinson.blogspot.com
This then should result in a 'commentors name' "joel-robinson", with the small OpenID logo before it and your blogs url hyperlinked to it.
Good Luck ;)
and now you used commented with your OpenID url?
at least that works..
If it doesn't work with the full url as what you enter, then it refers to your blogger profile (probably an incorrect entry, e.g. you mistakenly ended your url with '/', maybe?
It works! Thanks for the information on claimID account! :)
Jaaayy! Congrats, Joel :)
-Jos:))
Dear Jos,
many thanks for the tips, I have made one, and let me tested here. All the best
Rosari
Hi Rosari, thank you for that comment. I am glad my tips are useful to you. Drop in anytime, you are welcome!
-Jos
Hi Jos, thanks for dropping by in my blog, and thanks for remind me to switch my blog to support OpenId. I have switched my blog now.
All the best.
Rosari
I am glad it works, Rosario. Good Luck -- I think you did a good job explaining this to your readers!
Take care,
-Jos
Thanks for that dear..,
I have don a lil research on the same.. I think the issue is coz I'm using seat belt extension in firefox. ..
So it must be the conflict betwee the open id assigned in site and the seat belt in ff. I'm trying to make them alright.. but now delegation is not happeing..! the links are pointing to my open id pages!
Pss.. will know abou more once i comment in this post
Vishnu, it worked!
:)
Thanks for sharing and info.
